How Saraki Used Different Bank Drafts to Buy Properties in Lagos - Witness Confess in Court

Embattled senate president who is facing a 13-count charge bordering on allegations of false asset declaration and money laundering, has been exposed of using different bank drafts to purchase multi-million properties in Ikoyi, Lagos.

A witness, Michael Wetkas, on Monday, told the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) that Senate President Bukola Saraki used different bank drafts to buy properties in Ikoyi, Lagos.

 

Mr. Saraki is facing a 13-count charge bordering on allegations of false asset declaration and money laundering. He had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges.

 

At the resumed hearing of the case, the witness, an official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, who was led in evidence by prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), said Mr. Saraki bought the properties through his companies.

 

He said investigation revealed that House No. 15, Macdonald Street, Ikoyi, Lagos and Block 15, Flat 1 to 4 of the same street belonged to Mr. Saraki.

 

According to him, the senate president bought the properties from the Presidential Committee on Sale of Federal Government Landed Properties in Lagos through his companies.

 

He added that the defendant made a bank draft in the name of TYNITY Company limited, which he declared in the Asset declaration form.

 

He noted that when the EFCC investigation team wrote to the presidential committee seeking clarification, the committee said that from their records, the only property sold to the company was No. 15, Macdonald Street, Ikoyi.

 

Mr. Wetkas said 75 per cent, which amounted to N123.7million was paid for House No. 15, Macdonald Street, Ikoyi, through a bank draft from the account of one of Mr. Saraki’s company called Skyview Properties Limited in Access Bank.

 

He also said that investigation revealed that the defendant made a bank draft through his company TYNITY and paid for House No. 17, Macdonald Street in Ikoyi, Lagos in the sum of N256.3million.

 

“My lord, there was a draft of N12.8 million and another draft of N20 million from Zenith Bank, as well as a draft of N4 million from GTBank as part of payment for the purchase of House No. 17, Macdonald Street.

“The N20 million draft came from Carlys Properties and Investment Limited and a draft of 136.1 million was made on Jan. 13, 2007 for the purchase of same property. Another draft of N180.6 million was made through Mr. Saraki`s personal bank account in GTB."

 

The prosecution tendered a total of 43 exhibits, which were admitted in evidence.

 

The Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Umar Danladi, then turned down a request by Mr. Saraki’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), asking for daily records of proceedings of the court.

 

In his explanation, Mr. Danladi said the request would not be possible because it would overburden the registry of the court and that the law required defence to apply within a specific time and not daily.

 

However, a mild drama ensued when Mr. Agabi urged the tribunal not to further fix trial dates at a time when Senate was having plenary.

 

The tribunal, however, overruled his submission, saying it was the defendant that was facing trial and not the Senate.

NYSC Corps Members to Get Massive Pay Rise - Outgoing DG Reveals

Outgoing director-general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Monday announced plans to increase allowances of serving national corps members.

While handing over to Sule Kazaure, his successor yesterday in Abuja, outgoing director-general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Johnson Olawumi, on Monday, announced plans to increase allowances of corps members.

 

The former DG who added that the management of the scheme had drawn the attention of the federal government to the need to increase the allowances, said there was positive signal that the federal government would grant the request.

 

"We have brought to federal government’s attention the urgent need to increase some of the allowances due to corps members and recent response suggests a strong ray of light at the end of the tunnel.

"The major challenge I had as director-general of the scheme is the increasing corps population which was accompanied with dwindling financial resources. It is rather unfortunate that we could not execute some major programmes and activities due to paucity of funds.

"The scheme was not able to handle some of its programmes especially the sports and cultural festival in 2015. You may not be aware that series of letters that have been written and necessary follow up to the appropriate authorities on the need for proper funding of the scheme. This is especially important now that the current corps population has risen to 260,000 per year."

 

Olawumi advised Kazaure to make the welfare of corps members and staff his top priority, and to also boost their morale for effective service delivery.

"On Monday, January 6, 2014, I assumed duty as the 16th chief executive of the scheme during which I pledged to be transparent, fair and just to all toward the uplifting of the scheme.

"To actualise this, I wrote out my vision for the scheme which aimed to increase the impact of the NYSC scheme and expand its value to critical stakeholders. I could not have achieved much if I did not get the loyalty and support of the staff; whether I fulfilled in my duties or not, I leave it for you staff to judge me.

"I urge you staff of the scheme to continue to support the new head of the scheme to enable him consolidate on the successes and achievements so far recorded. Your role in the sustenance of the scheme cannot be overemphasised as this has over the years contributed to the development and progress of the country," he said.

 

While responding, Kazaure pledged to give corps and staff welfare priority, and called on them to support him to make the scheme achieve more success. "The task ahead is enormous and the road looks very rough but with sincerity of purpose we will make progress," he said.

 

He enjoined the staff to be more proactive to enable the NYSC achieve the desired success in line with the vision of the present administration.

CCT: EFCC Witness Admits Saraki Was Charged Without Petition

The case against Saraki concerning the false declaration of assets has continued with 17 exhibits being admitted against him.

A prosecution witness, Micheal Wetkas, a detective from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),‎ has revealed that the trial of the Senate president, Dr Bukola Saraki, by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) did not emanate from any petition against the Senate president, according to the Leadership.

Saraki is being tried before the tribunal by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) over alleged false assets declaration.

During the proceedings of the tribunal yesterday, Mr Wetkas, under cross examination by Saraki’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), told the Tribunal that he filed the charge against the Senate president on September 14, 2015, while the witness’ report, which forms part of proof of evidence, was filed on October 30, 2015.

According to him, it was the prosecutor who told him to file a summary report of his findings and activities during investigation. He said he did not mention any petition from Kwara Freedom Network, nor did he investigate the petition from the network by EFCC, adding that his own team’s investigation was based on intelligence report.

The witness also told the Tribunal that he did not investigate the pension scheme of Kwara State; neither did he have knowledge of the entitlements of the defendant.

The witness had, last week, told the Tribunal that Saraki was receiving monthly salaries from the Kwara State government for four years after the expiration of his tenure as governor of the state.

He also told the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) that the Senate president failed to declare his property located at No. 1 and No. 3 Targus Street, Maitama, Abuja, in the assets declaration he made in 2007 and 2011.

During its sitting yesterday, the Tribunal admitted 17 more exhibits as proof that Saraki owned the properties in question.

Among the documents tendered through the witness by the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), include a GTB Plc bank draft in the sums N256.3 million, N12.8 million and another N24 million as part payment for property on No. 17 Mcdonald Street, Ikoyi, Lagos, by the defendant.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has revealed that over 700,000 candidates applied to fill the vacancy for 10,000 personnel in the Nigeria police force recruitment.

 

Head of press and public relations of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement issued on Tuesday, has revealed that 705,352 candidates have so far applied to fill the vacancy for 10,000 personnel in the Nigeria police force (NPF).

 

According to spokesman, 202,427 applications were for the position of cadet assistant superintendent of police (ASP), 169,446 for the position of cadet inspector and 333,479 for the position of constables.

 

He added that the commission would recruit 500 cadet ASPs, 500 cadet inspectors, 1,500 specialist officers and 7,500 constables to meet the approved 10,000 new entrants into the force.

"The police service commission has, at 7.30am on Tuesday, April 19th, received 705,352 applications from applicants who are seeking employment into the recently advertised 10,000 vacancies into the Nigeria police force.

"President Muhammadu Buhari at last year’s national security summit had approved the recruitment of 10,000 police men into the nation’s Police Force to reinforce the Nigeria Police for better service," the statement read.

 

The statement also quoted Mike Okiro, chairman of the commission, as saying the process of receiving the forms had been smooth and transparent, and that all applicants would receive 'fairness and equal opportunity.'

A new scheme is set to be introduced by schools nationwide as Christian and Islamic Religious Studies which are separately taught, will now be merged under a compulsory subject.

In a bid to reduce the workload of primary and junior secondary pupils from 20 to a maximum of ten subjects under the nine-year basic educational curriculum and in order to align with International standards, the Federal Ministry of Education in conjunction with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), has introduced a new scheme/merger.

 

Under this scheme which was developed by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Christian and Islamic Religious Studies, which are separately taught, will now be merged under a compulsory subject known as Religion and National Values (RNV). 

 

Other subjects brought under the RNV include Civic Education, Social Studies, and Security Education.

Greedy and Insensitive Senators - NLC Issues Threat Over Purchase of Luxury Jeeps

Nigerian Senators have been termed greedy, insensitive and criminals by the NLC after they went ahead to buy 108 jeeps for themselves having taken car loans and inflating the cost of the cars by 100 per cent.

 

The Nigeria Labour Congress has asked the Senate to immediately return the 108 Toyota Land Cruiser jeeps that were delivered to some Senators last Thursday to the supplier or face the anger of Nigerians.

 

Also, the Trade Union Congress has said that the decision by the senators to acquire the luxury cars after collecting loans for the same purpose is criminal, greedy and insensitive.

 

Speaking on Monday, the President of the NLC, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, said that the decision of the Senate to buy the luxury cars only showed that the lawmakers were greedy and insensitive to the current economic plight of Nigerians.

 

He revealed the act was criminal as the unit cost of each of the 108 exotic cars was allegedly inflated by 100 per cent from the normal price of N17m to N35.1m.

 

The NLC president lamented that the Senate took a decision to acquire the controversial cars after taking a loan for the same purpose in August, 2015.

 

He said it was immoral for the Senate to acquire the expensive cars after admitting publicly that its standing committees could not carry out their duties because of lack of funds.

 

Wabba called on the relevant agencies to investigate the issues involved in the Senate’s acquisition of the 108 vehicles.

 

He stressed that Nigerians were interested in how the Senate got the money to buy the vehicles and why the Senate spent money which was not appropriated.

 

He said, “We consider it appalling, insensitive and greedy the decision of the Senate to acquire 108  Toyota Land Cruiser jeeps (one for each member less the Senate President) after collecting car ‘loans’ in August last year for the same purpose.

“It is equally morally despicable and shameful that they are doing this after publicly admitting that the standing committees of the Senate are unable to perform their statutory functions due to paucity of funds.

“We at the Nigeria Labour Congress equally consider it a willful and grievous criminal act, the inflation of the unit cost of each of the cars by over a 100 per cent, as each car supposedly cost N35.1m instead of N17m.

“Their multiple acts of criminality, ranging from acquiring these cars after previously taking loans for the same purpose; spending money without appropriation and over inflating costs constitute not just corruption but a crime against the Nigerian people whom they claim to represent.

“Accordingly, we demand they return those cars to whoever supplied them or the appropriate agencies prosecute them for corruption. In the event that none of this happens, they should be prepared to keep a date with Nigerian workers and their civil society allies, including market women and students.”

 

He wondered why the money spent in the acquisition of the cars could not be put to better use as constituency projects in the various constituencies of the lawmakers.

 

He lambasted the Senate for opting for luxury and comfort while millions of Nigerians languish in poverty. He described the latest decision of the Senate as insensitive which reflects their unwillingness to work for the people.

 

The President and Secretary of the TUC, Messrs Bala Kaigama and Simeso Amachree respectively, said in a statement on Monday that the senators had lost touch with the reality of the people who voted them into power.

 

TUC added, “It is an act of criminality to acquire cars after collecting loans for the same purpose.

“Where did such idea emanate from for God’s sake at a time the country is bleeding from all sides and seriously gasping for breath? This is obviously a pointer to the fact that our Senators mean no well for the country. They have lost touch with the plight of the people that vote for them.

“We want the Senate to immediately furnish Nigerians and the world with how they got money for the purchase of these cars without appropriation.”

Shocker! House of Representatives Conclude Plans to Buy 360 Cars Worth N3.6bn

As the heat over the decision by the Senate to buy 108 SUV for its members gathers momentum, the House of Representatives has ordered for 360 cars worth N3.6 billion even as many Nigerians suffer severe economic hardship.

The House of Representatives has settled for Peugeot 508 as official vehicles for the 360 members at a total cost of N3.6 billion, Daily Trust reports. 

 

According to the report, each vehicle costs N10 million and delivery will be made in two to three months. Last night that the House had already given Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) a letter of intent to supply the cars.

 

The report further states that the committee on House services, which is saddled with the responsibility of processing the purchase of the vehicles, met yesterday and took the final decision on the vehicles, it was learnt.

 

The cars are ostensibly intended for committee work. There are 96 standing committees in the House, but the cars would be shared in such a manner that each member would get one.

 

Initially the House had wanted to buy Camry 2016 model, but the  members changed their minds to avoid clash of interest because the sole major distributors of Camry in Nigeria, Vatswani Brothers, were under an investigation by the House.

 

The source said the National Assembly tenders’ board would meet this week on the matter and the cars might be supplied within the next few months.

 

The spokesman of the House Rep Abdulrazak Namdas (APC, Adamawa) confirmed that it was true that the House had settled on Peugeot 508 at the cost of N10 million each.

 

He said they decided to settle for a Nigerian company in order to boost the company’s revenue base, adding that the vehicles would be supplied between the next two and three months.

 

Namdas insisted that the vehicles would be for committee activities and not for the personal use of the lawmakers. This is coming at a time many Nigerians are groaning and crying of severe economic hardship and suffering.

 

It would be recalled that the Senate had started taking delivery of 108 Toyota Land Cruiser Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) it ordered for members at the cost of N3.8 billion. Thirty six of the vehicles, which cost N35.1 million each, were delivered last Tuesday and distributed to senators the following day.  

 

The Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress have asked the Senators to immediately return the cars to avoid clash with the masses.

The feud between the self acclaimed most richest blogger in Africa, Linda Ikeji and multi award winning singer, Wizkid, came to an end yesterday after the two met at the office of Lagos state Commissioner of Police and finally signed some documents and made peace. 

 

It can be recalled that Linda Ikeji had reported the threat issued by Wizkid on social media to have his 16-year-old brother beat up the blogger for publishing news on his quit notice.

According to Linda Ikeji, she chose to have the case settled out of court and not to prolong it because Wizkid and his lawyers had apologized to her on phone prior to meeting the commissioner of police.

 

“He tendered an apology to me and said he wasn’t a violent person, that he didn’t mean what he said, that it was just an emotional outburst. And then he asked for forgiveness.”

 

She took to her blog to narrate the details of the meeting and their agreements. Below is how she wrote it;

 

"So, I am going to write about this Wizkid matter for the very last time. Anything else after this will no longer concern me. So Wizkid and I met with the Commissioner of Police today and when the Commissioner asked me what I wanted them to do with the case...I told him that I wanted peace. And the reason why I insisted on peace and not to drag the matter further i.e go to court, is because Wizkid and his lawyers have been apologizing since Friday, up until today!

I spoke with Wizkid through his lawyer on Friday April 15th where he tendered an apology to me and said he wasn't a violent person, that he didn't mean what he said, that it was just an emotional outburst. And then he asked for forgiveness. Please continue...

But despite forgiving him, he still had to show up at the Police HQ to officially apologize and write an undertaken which he did today.

I see a lot of negativity has come out of this case with Wizkid - with many folks bashing me for reporting a threat on my person. But here's my consolation and why I am glad this happened. I promise you, especially the ladies, Wizkid will never threaten you with harm again.

 

At least not in public. I believe I am the last bus stop. He will think twice before threatening another human being again on social media. A police file has been opened for him, and he has been cautioned. The day he threatens another human being again with harm, then...

Having said that, I turned down taking a photo with him and the police commissioner this afternoon. One of his people took a pic of him and the commissioner with me in it and my people insisted they delete it. Not because I haven't forgiven him, I just don't need the extra drama.

The residents of a local community in the Rumuolumeni area of Portharcourt was met with tragedy some days ago when they woke up to find a lady hanging from her own suicide rope.

 

A resident of the area simply known as Prince Valentine who sent the photos to Tori News, disclosed that the young lady took her own life after her lover dumped her and allegedly married her best friend who was supposed to be her bridesmaid.

 

 

He said, "She killed herself because her boyfriend dumped her and married her best friend who was supposed to be her chief brides maid...what a tragedy!."

 

The photos reveal local residents untying the deceased from the suicide rope as a security operative watches from a distance.

 

 

The identity of the deceased, her lover who dumped her and her best friend who betrayed her, was not yet ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
