Reports have it that a People's Democratic Party chieftain and Governor of a South-south state is currently battling a serious illness that earned him a public embarrassment.

Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, reportedly slumped over last Wednesday at the government house in Asaba according to Sahara Reporters.

 

The news filtered in yesterday with no pictorial and visual evidence as at the time of filing his report. Rumours have it that the ill-fated event sent waves of shock within the leadership of the oil-rich state.

According to an impeccable government house source, who pleaded for anonymity, Mr. Okowa who was billed to attend the World Teachers Day celebration at the cenotaph last Wednesday. However, after all preparations were put in place, Mr. Okowa reportedly slumped over at his office preventing his attendance.

A source disclosed that immediately the governor was whisked away from the office to an undisclosed place for medical attention and his deputy, Kingsley Otuaro, was called to represent him at the event.

"I can tell you categorically that since that Wednesday till today the governor has not attended any public function. If you watch well, all the public functions, it’s the deputy that is representing him. Though, we can't tell why he slumped and the illness he is suffering from.

"Before becoming the state governor, he has been battling with unknown health challenges. Even when he was in the senate, he was with this unknown illness but some people close to him said what he is suffering from could not be far from some blood related illness," a source stated.

All efforts to contact the State Commissioner for Information, Patrick Ukah, proved abortive as his mobile line was switched off. However, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to governor, Charles Aniagwu swiftly debunked the story claiming it was not true.

Northern leaders gathered on Monday in Kaduna, the Kaduna State capital and told President Muhammadu Buhari to work harder at fixing the nation’s economy because there was hunger and starvation in the land.

 

Scholarly reports have always raised alarms about the skyrocketing rate of poverty in the northern part of the country which has been compounded by the present economic squeeze.

The northern leaders, however, said that despite the current economic woes characterising the President Buhari’s administration, their votes for him (Buhari) in the 2015 presidential election were never wasted, Punch reports.

If Buhari or any other northerner presented himself for Presidency in 2019, they said, they would gladly vote for the individual. A former Secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, who spoke on behalf of the northern elders at the Northern Group’s Summit organised by the Northern Elders Forum in Kaduna on Monday.

Besides, Baba-Ahmed said the summit was being held in Kaduna because of the prevailing peace brought about by the decimation of the Boko Haram sect by the Buhari administration.

He said, “Today, we meet in Kaduna in a vastly-improved security atmosphere, with the Boko Haram sect pinned to enclaves. Some will say thank you to President Buhari; we will say, you have delivered on one of your promises, which was to improve our security.”
The former INEC boss, however, reminded the President that there was hunger and starvation in the land.

He said, “We will not join those who say President Buhari should stop reminding us of a past that is haunting us today. But we will join those who remind him daily that hunger is stalking millions of homes. Inflation is making life difficult by the day. People are losing their jobs. Businesses are closing down. Infrastructure is decaying. Young Nigerians are losing hope of being employed. Our hospitals are full of people who suffer mysterious illnesses, and they cannot afford the fees.”

 

Meanwhile, the failure of the All Progressives Congress-led administration to surmount the economic crisis has dealt a fatal blow on the popularity of the party as supporters have been left jaded.

A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos on Monday, arraigned a 36-year-old woman, Ifeyinwa Nlemchi, on a two-count charge bordering on malicious damage after she allegedly burnt her husband’s official documents to protest his adulterous acts in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

 

According to New Telegraph, Roman Unuigbe  who is the prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offences on September16 at their residence, adding that the accused who suspected that her husband was having an illicit relationship with another woman, planted a tape in his office bag to record their conversations.

 

He said the accused also found out that her husband was spending time at a hotel with another woman and out of jealousy, took all the documents he had brought from work and set them on fire.

“Her husband, who made a report at the police station, said he wanted her charged to court for wilfully destroying four international passports belonging to clients of Multi Choice Nigeria."

 

The offences contravened Sections 338 and 348 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011.

 

Speaking in the court, the accused, Ifeyinwa, pleaded not guilty to the charges, and in his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mr P.A. Ojo, granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

 

He said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused and should be gainfully employed in a reputable and verified organisation, adding that the sureties must show evidence of tax payment to the government.

 

The case was adjourned to November 4 for substantive trial.

A 20-year-old man has left many people in great shock after he chopped off his own manhood with a machete and threw it in the toilet.

 

He is nursing serious injuries at Busia Referral Hospital in Kenya after the incident.

 

According to a report by eDaily, Jafar Rashid claims life’s frustrations drove him to commit the drastic act, adding that his addiction to drugs mostly bhang (cannibis) also contributed to his woes.

 

Speaking on how the incident happened, his mother, Roselyn Fazira, said he asked for a knife saying he wanted to use it to cut some mangoes. Shortly after he got the knife, he emerged from his room bleeding, only for the mother to realize he had cut off his manhood.

 

The incident attracted a large crowd who came to witness the drama. Explaining why the man cut off his p*nis, Rashid’s aunt, Maurine Juma, said Rashid frustrations stemmed from a sodomy incident that took place at Nambale Police Station some time back.

 

It is believed he was sodomized by another man which has left him depressed over time.

Three 30-foot pythons were in the early hours of Tuesday reportedly killed by some gallant security guards of Greenland Estate in the Mende, Maryland area of Lagos State as the security guards on the estate put them up for sale for N10,000.

 

According to a report by Punch Metro, the killing of the reptiles who were exposed after the dredging activities of the Lagos State Government, brought panic into the estate as residents expressed fear for their safety.

 

Speaking to a correspondent, Sola Adekoya, who is the Vice Chairman of the estate, said more than 15 pythons had been killed on the estate in 2016 alone, urging the government to find a lasting solution to the overgrown canals in the area.

 

He said, “The security men and some squatters caught the three pythons this morning around 8am. The giant snakes were about 30-foot long.

“We have seen more than 15 pythons this year alone; the guards kill them regularly. The reason is that the canals are overgrown and the snakes always hide under the canals. We need government’s  intervention on time to avoid any tragedy.”

 

Also speaking to a correspondent, a visitor to the area, Adewale Adeoye, disclosed that he saw the three snakes when they were alive and urged the Lagos State Government to create a zoological garden for the animals to preserve them and generate income for the state.

 

He said, “These snakes are worth a fortune abroad. The Lagos State Government should conduct a wildlife survey in order to preserve threatened animals and plants.

“How can you be talking of a mega city without a green zone or a biological garden? The young men have gone to sell the snakes for N10,000; a generation of rare animal species gone down the throat in less than 24 hours. This merely reflects poverty of ideas in governance.”

The authorized biographer of President Muhammadu Buhari, says the president had incriminating evidence to put former President Goodluck Jonathan in jail for corruption.

A professor of international studies and President Buhari's the authorised biographer, John Paden, who recently launched his book entitled, 'Muhammadu Buhari: Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria', has revealed that the president had evidence to put former President Goodluck Jonathan in jail for corruption, but he did not want to do so.

 

TheCable News reported that in his book, Paden wrote that Buhari was more concerned about recovering stolen funds than about jailing anybody, adding that Buhari had letters in his possession showing Jonathan’s request for off-budget funds.

“As of the early months of 2016, it appeared that the EFCC was not going after Jonathan. Nor was it going after former president Obasanjo. The question of the stability of the entire political system seemed at stake,” Paden wrote in chapter 20, page 203.

“In addition, a number of senior military officers who had served as head of state – from Babangida to Abubakar – seemed off limits. Indeed, rumours swirled that if the probes went after senior officers, they might push back, because they had extensive networks in the active military services.

“At the same time, the knowledge such heavyweights possessed could well be traded for immunity, and would help to illuminate the patterns and sources of corruption. Buhari had letters in his possession showing Jonathan’s requests for off-budget funds. But Buhari’s larger purpose was not to put former high-level officials in jail. Rather, it was to retrieve stolen funds and to change the political culture of the country.”

 

The president’s biographer in chapter 8, page 67 also alleged that Jonathan withdrew “enormous” funds from the treasury as the March 28 presidential election approached.

“The threat of postelection violence was palpable. There would be winners and losers, quite likely with a regional or ethnoreligious profile. The international community was deeply concerned. Was Nigeria on the brink? High level diplomatic demarches were made to both candidates. A highly publicised ‘Peace Accord’ was signed by Jonathan and Buhari. But would they be able to control grassroots supporters,” he wrote, explaining events leading to the election.

“As March 28 approached, enormous sums of money were withdrawn from the treasury by the incumbents.”

During the opening session of the 22nd Nigerian Economic Summit (NEC) which was held in Abuja, the federal capital territory on Monday, Nigeria's Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, was embarrassed live on stage and all national televisions.

 

The minister was reportedly left red-faced and totally embarrassed when he failed to answer a simple question to divulge the specific figure of Nigeria’s debt profile when he was asked about the nation's total debt profile by a CNN anchor identified as Zain Asher.

“How much is Nigeria’s total debt?,” Zain Asher, a CNN Anchor, asked the minister.

 

In response, a befuddled Udoma said: “I can’t tell you the exact figure. I will have to get back to you on that.”

 

Asher, however, responded with a challenge, saying: “But you are the minister of budget”.

 

The clearly-rattled budget minister neither gave a ballpark figure nor stated that the Debt Management Office (DMO) was in charge of keeping records of the nation’s debt profile.

 

Instead, he informed Asher that several committees were saddled with the responsibility of compiling Nigeria’s debt and as such, he could not give a precise figure.

BBC film crews captured this incredible interaction between two fringeheads during David Attenborough’s recent Life television series.

 

The two predators compete by pressing their mouths against each other – like a horrifying kiss – in order to determine which of the two fish is the larger animal.

"The Nairobi News understands that Mr Brown had pitched tent at the Mombasa Golf Club – the venue of the event – from 9pm and had requested to be on the stage by 11pm, since he had to fly out of the country by Sunday, 3am.

"The organizers were also accused of failing to give value for money to people who had VIP tickets, bought at Sh20,000.

“Like during Wizkid’s performance, if you had a VIP ticket, you could only see him partially. Some people holding VIP tickets had to move to the arena where people with Sh5,000 tickets were standing,” said a source.

"Mr Brown is said to have been paid Sh90 million for his 90-minute performance."

Nigerian Banking Industry Seen in 'Full-Blown' Credit Crisis - Bloomberg Reveal Names of Banks in Crisis

An exclusive and investigative report by Bloomberg LP - an American financial software and media company headquartered in New York City, has revealed the sorry state of financial crisis currently rocking some Nigerian banks.

Nigeria’s banking industry is experiencing a “full-blown financial crisis” as failed fiscal and monetary policies lead to a credit crunch, according to Arqaam Capital.

 

Unity Bank Plc and Skye Bank Plc are close to being insolvent, while lenders FBN Holdings Plc and Sterling Bank Plc “will need a dilutive capital hike,” Jaap Meijer and Tarek Sleiman, analysts at the Dubai-based investment bank and brokerage, said in an e-mailed note on Monday. Capital ratios are set to worsen because of currency depreciation and souring loans, they said. Calls to Unity weren’t immediately returned and Skye didn’t reply to questions.

 

The central bank in July replaced the management of Skye after the lender breached liquidity thresholds, spurring concerns about the health of small- and medium-sized lenders, and reviving memories of bank rescues by the government after the financial crisis in 2009. Nigerian banks are grappling with a devaluation of the naira, rising bad loans and an oil-dependent economy that’s set to record its first annual contraction in more than two decades.

 

“Our acid test reveals seven under-capitalized banks” with a deficit of as much as 1 trillion naira ($3.2 billion) in the financial system, Meijer and Sleiman said. A stress test identified FBN as the most under capitalized lender with Unity, Diamond Bank Plc, Skye, FCMB Group Plc, Sterling and Fidelity Bank Plc also showing deficits if they were to fully provide for non-performing loans, according to Arqaam.

 

“Our bank is strong,” Ikechukwu Mike Omeife, a spokesman for Diamond Bank, said by phone from Lagos. “Our capital-adequacy ratio and non-performing loans are within the statutory requirements.”

Moody’s Investors Service said on Monday that Nigeria’s five biggest banks share common credit challenges related to the economic slowdown. Moody’s expects non-performing loans to increase to about 12 percent over the next 12 months. The ratio of non-performing loans to total credit rose to 11.7 percent at the end of June from 5.3 percent at the end of 2015, the Abuja-based Central Bank of Nigeria, which requires banks keep the measure below 5 percent, said in a report on its website.

 

The five largest lenders, which together hold 57 percent of the country’s banking assets, “are able to absorb all losses under our severe stress scenario,” Moody’s said. Guaranty Trust Bank Plc showed “the greatest resilience” and the other four banks were Zenith Bank Plc, Access Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc and First Bank of Nigeria Ltd., the ratings company said.

 

To create a capital buffer, Sterling Bank is planning to issue a 27 billion-naira bond and “if the interest rate looks better, we will do it this year,” Abubakar Suleiman, the lender’s chief financial officer, said by phone. “We will do it if the rate goes down to around 15 percent or 16 percent. We don’t want to raise it at a very high rate. If we do it, it will take our capital adequacy ratio to over 15 percent.”

Diamond Bank fell 5.5 percent, Fidelity dropped 4.3 percent, Skye Bank slid 4.6 percent and Unity slipped 4.1 percent. Union Bank Nigeria Plc, which is part owned by London-based Atlas Mara Ltd., was the second-biggest gainer, rising 5 percent.

While speaking with a small group of radio journalists and producers at the Presidential Villa Abuja, on Tuesday, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, said that the implementation plans for the effective commencement of a number of the social investment programmes has reached advanced stages as the selection of the first 200,000 unemployed graduates to get jobs is now being completed.

 

According to Premium Times, the VP said that “we expect that before the end of the month, we will engage 200,000,” out of the 500,000 unemployed graduates the Buhari administration plans to hire in the N-Power jobs programme.

 

He revealed that the direct government jobs is meant “to keep this young people occupied, pay them some amount of money and also give them a device, which will also help them to learn several skills that they can develop as time goes on.”

 

Prof. Osinbajo added that “we expect that before the end of this month, we should have engaged 200,000 of them and we are hoping that before the end of the year we should have engaged more.”

 

Speaking further, the former Lagos state commissioner of justice, disclosed that the Home-Grown School Feeding programme is set to kick off in several states this month.

“Definitely before the end of this month, we expect that several states would have come on stream with their Home-grown School Feeding Programmes,” the Vice President noted.

 

He added that the Home-Grown School Feeding programme “will energise agriculture in the different states because it is what you plant that you feed the children with, we will be hiring caterers, cooks, etc in each state because it will be Federal Government funded from Primaries 1-3 and the state governments hopefully would be able to cater for the other classes.”

 

According to the Vice President, the Home-Grown School Feeding programme is another section of the Social Investment programmes that impact directly on the lives of Nigerian children and families. He said several states will start implementing the Home-grown School Feeding Programme before the end of October.

The leadership of the People's Democratic Party in Edo has progressed in its advocacy against the outcome of the recent gubernatorial election in the state.

 

Edo State Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Benin City has granted an order for the People’s Democratic Party and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to inspect all the electoral materials used by the Independence National Electoral Commission for the conduct of the September 28 Edo State governorship election.

Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressive Congress was declared winner of the election after he polled over 319, 483 votes to defeat Pastor Ize-Iyamu who polled 253,173 votes.

The order by the tribunal followed an ex-parte motion filed by Counsel to the PDP and Pastor Ize-Iyamu, Barr. Kingsley Obamogie
 

Barr. Obamogie said the motion was in compliance with section 151 of the Electoral Act, 2010 as amended which he relied on to pray the court to grant them the order to inspect the INEC materials.
 

Chairman of the tribunal, Hon. Justice .A. Badamasi granted the order after listening the argument of Obamogie. Other members of the tribunal are Justices E.A. Ade Sodun, and Hon. Khadi Adamu Usman who are to serve as members.

Obamogie said, “In compliance with the section 151 of the Electoral Act of 2010 as amended, we have approached and pray the court to grant us the permission to inspect all the Electoral, materials used by INEC in the just concluded Edo State Governorship Election”.
 

An official of the tribunal would only be inaugurated only when petitions have been filed by aggrieved parties and their candidates that participated in the governorship election, according to The Nation.

In what will come across as a really shocking development, a Buddhist priest who had died for as long as 84 years has been sighted alive.

Religious leaders in Russia have claimed that the mummified remains of a Buddhist lama (Buddhist priest) who died 89 years ago wandered around a museum in a bid for world peace.

 

The preserved remains of Lama Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov - the revered Buddhist leader in Russia before and after the Bolshevik Revolution - are normally kept in a glass sarcophagus located on the second floor of his 'palace' near Ulan-Ude in Siberia.

 

But now local religious leaders claim CCTV footage shows the lama moving both on Sunday and Monday night, in what they say might be a call for world peace.

 

Some Buddhists believe that the lama, who died in 1927 and was buried in the lotus position before his remains were exhumed with almost no decay, remains alive or hibernates in a nirvana-like state.

And Lama Damba Ayusheev, current head of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha, hit back at claims from doubters that one of the fuzzy pictures likely shows a security guard possibly wearing military fatigues, carrying two bags and wearing shoes.

 

He told the Siberian Times: 'One image shows a grainy figure in the foreground, while a second, a day later, shows a similar figure close to or on a sofa.

'This is not a joke, that's for sure' posted Ayusheev, from the Republic of Buryatia, a Buddhist region of Russia.

'I see a figure of a man on the shot, as you do, and I know precisely there could not be anyone in the Palace of Khambo Lama Itigilov at this time.'

 

The first sighting was at 8.05pm when nobody had access to the lama's chamber at this time, he insisted.

 

He added: 'The lama is in five or six metres down the hall on his throne, and this place [where the man stands] is at the front door.'

A second picture apparently showing lama Itiligov was on the move again, this time by the sofa.

 

The images are poor quality and he has not released full footage but said the image was triggered by movement in the room.

 

'There is no video, only a flash from the body on the shot,' he said. 

 

'I was taken aback by this image, though somewhere in the depths of the mind I imagined such a possibility, but I still was not ready to see this,' said Ayusheev.

 

A spokesman for the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia, Tubden Baldanov, agreed that Lama Itigelov had moved and added: 'The fact that he appeared in camouflage ... We do not know.

'Maybe it's some kind of sign? Maybe he says something? Perhaps, that the international organisations should work on peace?'

 

Born in 1852, Lama Itiligov was prominent in the spiritual life of tsarist Russia immediately before the Bolshevik Revolution.

 

He took part in the Tercentenary celebrations of the House of Romanov in 1913, and opened the Datsan Gunzechoinei, the first Buddhist temple in St Petersburg.

 

The famous lama died in 1927, the year after warning Buddhist monks to leave the Soviet Union because they would be overwhelmed by 'Red teaching'. His final request was to buried in the lotus position, in which he had died.

 

When his remains were examined in 1955 and again in 1973 the monks were astonished to note no signs of decay. They kept their knowledge hidden from the Soviet authorities.

 

In September 2002, Itigilov's body was exhumed once more in the presence of the leaders of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia.

 

It was closely examined by monks as well as by scientists and pathologists.

 

The remains were found to be 'in the condition of someone who had died 36 hours ago', extraordinarily well preserved and without signs of decay.

 

Muscles and inner tissue, soft joints and skin remained intact, according to accounts of the observations.

 

Some have claimed that the lama was preserved in salt. Others say he is in a state of hibernation, nirvana-like, and is in fact still alive.
