A man was filmed deliberately charging at a taxi and diving headfirst into the windscreen and has claimed he felt like a ghost had possessed his body.

Shocking dashcam footage showing the man inexplicably run out into the middle of the road and straight towards the oncoming car has been viewed online millions of times since the bizarre incident on Friday.

It captures the moment the 39-year-old emerges from the building and makes a beeline for the taxi before shattering the windscreen with his head.

Remarkably, the man - identified only as Li - was not seriously injured and was discharged from a hospital in Hong Kong on Saturday with cuts to his legs and a large head bandage.

Some viewers have claimed the stunt was an insurance scam, or that Li was trying to deliberately injure himself in order to claim compensation.

But in an interview with Oriental Daily, Li said he was unable to truly explain his actions, saying he felt like a "ghost had possessed his body" .

"Why would I do that for money? I can't claim anything. I did it myself," said Li, who said he was once financially compensated after being hit by a car.
